Ngā Taonga Sound & Vision, AUT and Colab present, "Fantail" a story about belonging. Sweet, bitter and eccentric, the debut feature film from Sophie Henderson (writer, actor) and Curtis Vowell (director) was named one of The Dominion Post's top ten films of 2013.

Tania, a Pākehā girl who thinks she’s Māori, spends her nights working at the petrol station, saving all her money so she can take her brother Piwakawaka to Surfer’s Paradise to find their dad. But flitting and dodging in true fantail spirit, Pi causes plans to go awry.

Shot in just 20 days, with support from the New Zealand Film Commission’s low-budget Escalator scheme, Fantail received eight nominations at the 2013 New Zealand Film Awards, including nominations for Best Film, Best Director and Best Actress.

"The film's about family, sacrifice and mistakes. It's also a film that's charming and funny and unnervingly dark. There's a quality to the writing that takes you by surprise: that highlights the beauty and ugliness of life in ways you don't expect, casting them in a flickering, fluorescent kind of light." - Rosabel Tan, The Pantograph Punch, 25 July 2013
