On a spring day in May 2008 Sichuan, China was struck with a devastating earthquake, which claimed the lives of over 70,000 of its inhabitants. In September 2010, the people of Christchurch, New Zealand experienced the same natural disaster.

The Leshan Modern Dance Company of Sichuan, immediate response was a seven minute dance piece Hands Rebirth, choreographed by He Chuan. In October 2010, it inspired visiting Artistic Director, Brett Sheehy, to bring Christchurch born choreographer and director Sara Brodie to meet with the company to develop a full-length work for 2012 Melbourne Arts Festival. Thus Fault Lines evolved from the sharing of stories, observations and first-hand experiences of those involved.

Fault Lines combines contemporary Western dance and traditional Chinese ethnic dance in a unique blend to explore what happens to those left in the wake of an unimaginable tragedy. It is an international collaboration between the Leshan Modern Dance Company, Melbourne Arts Festival and Christchurch Arts Festival, across which many hands, including the Chinese Culture Ministry, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Australia etc., have joined in the creation.
