There will be wood turning demonstrations by 3 of New Zealand’s leading turners, Terry Scott, Dick Veitch and Gordon Pemberton. They will be supported by local experts from the Guild, such as Hugh Mill and Graeme McIntyre. The range of the demonstrations will meet the needs of beginners through to advanced turners.

The wood carvers and scroll saw people will run continuous workshops teaching at all levels of skill. Beginners are especially welcome. Advice will be offered on the type of equipment to buy, suitable wood and safety. Each of the carving styles, such as low relief, three-dimensional, whittling etc, will be demonstrated. John Spittal, Archie Kerr and Allan Sanson will provide the tuition.

Other disciplines such as historic green woodworking, toy making and some furniture making will be presented through ongoing working displays in the Spine of Pataka.

Four competitions, all open to the Public, will be held. Three will involve the spinning wooden tops for the longest possible time using one pull of the string. There are children’s, all wood construction and open competitions. Last years record for the open event was 14 minutes 11 seconds. The fourth competition requires the most number of marshmallows to be thrown into a bucket at, 7 metres, using a small, home made, trebuchet like machine. A mortar trajectory is required.

Free participation, open to all ages. Book a place through the reception desk at Pataka.
