Fracking* threatens the air we breathe, the water we drink, the communities we love and the climate on which we depend

Many people are not aware that fracking is happening in New Zealand and most are unaware of the extent of the fracking and the planned expansion of the petroleum industry onshore and off.

Many Kiwis are not aware of the effects fracking is having: on local communities; on public health; on the environment; as well as the effects it could have on our international reputation, trade and tourism and the effects on future generations is mostly unknown to all.

Jean Kahui is speaking on behalf of the Frack Free NZ movement, which aims to inform kiwis and to encourage community action to stop the fracking of Aotearoa/NewZealand.

Fracking is the practice of blasting water, chemicals and sand deep into oil and gas wells to shatter source rock. When shattered, the rock releases oil and gas which is brought to the surface along with large amounts of toxic fluid called flow back and/or produced water. Fracking is short for ‘Unconventional Hydraulic Fracturing’.
