Emerging choreographers take on contemporary dance, mixing traditional forms with aerial circus, interactive props and Pacific folklore in FRESH. Rosa Strati, Katerina Fatupaito, Jess Quaid, Chris Ofanoa & Katie Rudd (New Zealand Dance Company) and Sophie Follett breathe fresh air into this well-loved annual showcase. Physical stamina, innovation and sophistication infuse these new New Zealand dance works

Rosa Strati presents Throat — An ode to the forts we build to suppress our truths and to the cracks that they crawl out of anyway.

Jess Quaid and Kat Bolstad present Highbrid — Cross-overs may be artistically rich, but they're not always well-fated. Combining the creative brilliance of Jess Quaid and Kat Bolstad this short work combines aerials, dance and a lot of sparkles into one somewhat epic story. Featuring fish, fowl, and a possible explanation for the playtpus.

Katerina Fatupaito presents Burnt Skin — Inspired by a family story about an Ai Tagata (cannibal); he is never spoken of and his story has diminished to a mere legend. There are no songs and no chants to help ‘uncover’ and re-tell the ‘ Legend of Leaitutuliafili’ in its fullness. The dance is told through the eyes of an Ai Tagata and in doing so, it takes us into an unknown territory of a family story.

The New Zealand Dance Company presents Company of Another — An exploration of two : two bodies, two energies, two styles, two responses. Choreographed by Katie Rudd performed by NZDC dancers Chris Ofanoa and Katie Rudd, set to music by Brandon Wolcott and Emil Abramyan.

Sophie Follett presents Licht — The light has become an obsession,
To our skin, to our eyes, to our bodies
We want more
Who are we with it?
Who are we without it?

“FRESH is an experience that delivers, with a level of sophistication.” — Theatreview
