In 2014 we took a group of 12 young New Zealand triathletes over to the Runaway Bay ITU Youth Festival on the Gold Coast. The event was run over 3 days with the very best athletes from around Australia all competing in a range of disciplines across swim, bike and run.

The New Zealanders performed admirably against tough opposition, the highest result being Gisborne's Tayler Reid who finished 3rd overall.

The event was contested by approximately 250 athletes across the various age groups and the quality of racing was exceptional.

The decision was made to approach Triathlon NZ and propose a similar event here in New Zealand for the 2015/16 season. At the same time Tri NZ were looking to add to their Junior / Youth pathway and develop a National Series of races for the 2015/16 season.

As part of a Postgraduate Diploma in Sport & Exercise at Massey University I was required to plan and deliver a sports event here in NZ in 2015. Triathlon NZ agreed that the Future ChampioNZ Festival would align with their current goals for the Talent Pathway and we therefore agreed that the festival would be the first event in the new and exciting National Junior Race Series.

The Future ChampioNZ Festival's goal is to support the work of the Regional Youth Academies and their coaches, athletes will be encouraged to work with their RYC's throughout the weekend.

Opportunities will be provided for athletes and regional youth coaches to spend time working on skills and strategies to compliment their racing experiences throughout the weekend.

The over-riding goal of the Future ChampioNZ Festival is to add to the Tri NZ Youth Pathway and ultimately see more Kiwi athletes succeed on the world stage whilst providing a fun and exciting race weekend for all youth athletes.
