John Robert Dunn [Jack to his family] was born in the Wairarapa. In his 50s Jack's great nephew learned of his story and began to do research into the circumstances that saw a young Kiwi soldier found sick and asleep at his post at Quinn’s Post on Gallipoli. Court-martialled, he was sentenced to death but this was remitted on 5 August 1915 just in time for him to rejoin his unit for one of the bloodiest days of the Dardanelles Campaign – the assault on Chunk Bair. Jack was one of many deaths on that day and one of many bodies never recovered. This exhibition captures the very personal response of Pat White to his relatives life and death. It does so through letters, diary extracts, paintings and very sensitive poems.
