“Duchess Club” is a tantalizing new jazz super group comprising of some of the best subterranean jazz musicians in the country. Three of the four musicians met in Wellington whilst studying at the jazz conservatorium and since then have played with a virtual who’s who of seminal New Zealand jazz musicians.

Vocals - Margot Wuts-Pierard:
After having studied in Christchurch and sung in Auckland and Hamilton, Margot moved to Wellington where she became involved with the electrifying local music scene. Vocalist with the uproariously infamous jazz group “Shaken Not Stirred”, critically lauded in the Wellington International Jazz Festival’s “Tribute To Nina Simone”, she went on to become a regular member of the percussion group “Strike” (“Strike Sound System”), alongside Lisa Tomlins (“Fly My Pretties”, “Neil Finn”, etc.) headlining such venues as the Queenstown Winter Festival and the Manukau Arts Festival.

Vibraphone - Nicky Wuts:

This unusual instrument is made up of 36 metal bars, each with a resonator tube below. Each tube contains a spinning disc which vibrates the sound wave as the metal bar is struck, giving the instrument its signature sound. Nicky has played with many seminal musicians of the New Zealand jazz scene, including: Lucien Johnson (The Troubles, The Black Seeds), Chris O’Connor (Don McGlashan, The Phoenix Foundation), Reuben Bradley (The Orb, Mantis, and a two-time recipient of the Tui Jazz Album of the year) and many more. She has also featured regularly at the Wellington International Jazz Festival and the Manawatu Jazz Festival. Nicky is looking forward to returning to the Bay (having previously played at “Church Road Jazz” and with “Bossa Legal”) and giving audiences another unique opportunity to hear the vibraphone in the hands of a master.

Piano - Rosie Langabeer:
Rosie Langabeer is an award winning composer, experimental musician and instigator with a taste for things that teeter on the intersection of the serious and the absurd. Langabeer composes regularly for theatre, dance and musical ensembles of various sizes and has performed extensively in NZ and internationally throughout the USA (2010 – 2013), the UK (2013), Mexico City (2010) and France (2005).
Highly sought after for interdisciplinary creative arts projects, Langabeer’s compositional approach is responsive to the unique skills and qualities of her collaborators. Her methods are experimental with a large focus on social dynamics and improvisation; catalyzing local music communities and enhancing the development of new work. Langabeer has received numerous commissions including the Bowerbird Sound Sculpture Commission for Design Philadelphia (2012) and Wilma Theatre/Ballet X Commission for the Philadelphia International Festival of the Arts (2011). Recent festival appearances include Bowerbird’s John Cage Festival (USA, 2013), Philadelphia International Festival of the Arts (2011, 2013). Her list of collaborators include: Pig Iron Theatre Company (USA), Matthew Neenan and BalletX (USA), Neil Feather (USA), Elliot Levine (USA), Jack Wright (USA), Bowerbird (USA), No Face Performance Group (USA), Subcircle Dance Theatre (USA), Awkward Productions, Ake Ake Theatre Company, Alyx Duncan, Jeff Henderson, Briar March, Carol Brown, Chris O’Connor and Jenny MacArthur.

Bass - Dan Fulton:
Performed with the award winning Blue Note recording artist American singer Nicole Henry.
Longterm member of Mantaray Trio featuring Silver Scroll winning drummer Steve Cournane.
Degree in Jazz Bass studying with renowned New Zealand bassist Paul Dyne.
In addition to jazz, a deep involvement in the New Zealand pop & rock industry, sharing the stage with Liam Finn, Ladyhawke & members of Phoenix Foundation.
Extensive European touring with Connan Mockasin.
