A moving image and sound exhibition by Deane-Rose Ngatai.

The works in "He reo, he tikanga e whare nei i ā tāua" are an expression of bicultural experiences within urban Māori education. Exploring concepts of urban whānau and urban whakapapa, the series is a reflection of Ngatai's journey through kaupapa Māori, bilingual education initiatives. While centered in Ngatai's worldview, the work is both connected to her personal whakapapa (genealogy/lineage) and to the whānau (community) of Ngā Tūmanako ō Kahurangi, Auckland Girls' Grammar School.

Combining still, moving image and sound to create stories, Ngatai explores contemporary digital storytelling. Works are composed independently and woven together through projection forming the body of the wider kaupapa (subject). Each video work has been composed with three elements creating a series of video triptychs. This technique has been used to express whakapapa, layer upon layer in which this kaupapa has evolved from.

Please join us for the exhibition opening at 6pm, Wednesday 18 March. All welcome.
