The Hilux New Zealand Rural Games is a brand new family event bringing together a host of traditional sports and live entertainment to celebrate the country’s rural heritage.

With daily entertainment provided by comic duo The Topp Twins, the inaugural Games take place in downtown Queenstown over Waitangi weekend, Saturday and Sunday 7-8 February 2015.

The day before, Waitangi Day, more than 300 merino sheep will run through downtown Queenstown in a sight not seen for decades! Called the ‘Running of the Wools’, this event is free to watch anywhere along the route from Athol Street along Beach Street to Earnslaw Park. Don’t miss the action that starts at midday.

Back at the Games themselves there'll be a range of 'sports that built the nation' on show including national championships for speed shearing, sheep dog trials, speed fencing, gumboot throwing plus a feature event of the 2015 ANZ Young Farmer Contest, the Silver Fern Farms Agri-Sport Challenge and much more.

Trans-Tasman rivalry will sharpen with the ANZAXE Wood Chopping Championship whilst ‘bravehearts’ from both sides of the Ditch will also go head-to-head in the four heavy Highland Games disciplines of caber toss, stones, farmer’s walk and sheaf toss.

In addition to championship events there will be opportunities for spectators to have a go themselves. Under-12s can take part in Jetstar Kids 'n Country - a series of fun events just for them like cherry stone spitting and cow pat throwing!

A variety of food stalls offer delicious wild food and hearty country fare matched by cold beer and outstanding local wines. Adding to the flavour of the weekend, The Topp Twins also open a live concert on the Saturday evening headlined by country pop sensation, Jody Direen.
