Recollective Awareness Meditation is a form of Vipassana meditation developed by Jason Siff. It is an open meditation practice, where you are kind and gentle to oneself, allowing thoughts and emotions to go on during the meditation sitting. After the sitting is over, you recollect what went on during it, and in that way build greater awareness of your mind in meditation. Another part of this approach is the natural settling down of thoughts and emotions in meditation, where awareness of the body, breath and the senses can then move into the foreground or your mind can drift into states of greater calm and tranquility. You can also do your own meditation practice during this retreat if you so choose.

During this 3-day retreat, Jason will give talks on meditation practice and the Buddha’s Teaching from a more or less Secular Buddhist perspective. There will be daily group interviews, as well as optional individual interviews, and opportunities to ask questions about meditation practice. The meditation sittings will be in the thirty to forty-minute range, with time set aside after each sitting for journal writing.

Jason Siff is the head teacher of the Skillful Meditation Project. He is the author of “Unlearning Meditation: What to do when the instructions get in the way,” and, more recently, “Thoughts Are Not The Enemy: An Innovative Approach to Meditation.” Every year he teaches in Australia and he has trained several teachers there. Recollective Awareness Meditation is an approach to Vipassana Meditation that he first developed as a Buddhist monk in Sri Lanka in the 1980s and further refined over his twenty-five years of teaching. This is his second visit to New Zealand and his first retreat in Auckland.
