International Mother Language Day (IMLD) was first proclaimed by the General Conference of UN's Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 1999 to promote linguistic and cultural diversity and multilingualism. The Day provides a wonderful opportunity to discover and celebrate the rich diversity of languages spoken in our own communities.

This year, IMLD will be joined with the most important festival in the Chinese calendar—Chinese New Year, also known as the Chinese Spring Festival (Chun Jie). It is a time for family reunion, good food, and many traditions and themes of good luck, fortune, happiness, wealth and longevity. During the New Year, children are given Red Packets (Hong Bao) for blessings and good luck.

On February 21st, 2015, English Language Partners Palmerston North invites you to join us in this dual celebration. It is a free event open to everybody in the community to celebrate our linguistic and cultural diversity, and to welcome the Year of the Sheep. Ethnic fashion show, musical performances and Red Packets for the lucky children are on the list of interesting activities on the day. Light refreshment will be provided.
