Have a go! This course is intended to introduce you to the basic skills and techniques that can make writing so enjoyable. You might be a complete beginner. Or you might already keep a journal, or have written some poetry or short stories, but would like to find out about some of the tools professional writers use to make their work publishable. If so, then this is the course for you. We create a supportive environment in which you can spread your wings, take risks, but in the knowledge that our expert professional writers will provide a guiding hand.
We show you how to create powerful scenes, with a beginning, climax and end; how to knit these scenes together into a rivetting story; how to show rather than tell; how to write sizzling dialogue; how to choose the right Point of View. We also look at the musicality of language, and introduce you to the techniques used by great poets. You will learn about the five common traps that beginner writers fall into.
As you develop your skills you will find great satisfaction in being able to express your inner voice. The best writers are big readers, and this course also provides you with a reading list to help develop your work over time.
In the classroom, we rely on a supportive group dynamic, in which everyone gets a chance to read their work, which is received and reviewed in a supportive way but with some constructive feedback as to how to improve your writing. For poets who would like to take part in poetry slams for the first time, we show you how to express and project your reading in a public environment.
Eighteen Creative Hub graduates have published novels or been successful in national writing awards in the last three years.
In the online version of this course, our expert professional writers guide you through the eight modules of the course, providing you with feedback at each step of the way. You will up-skill at your own pace, to the point where you will feel free to express yourself confidently in your own voice, and with a new range of skills.
Graduates of the Introductory course receive a 10% discount on our 30 Week Fiction / Memoir Course, taught by some of NZ's leading authors.
The Introduction to Creative Writing course is taught by John Cranna, Director of the Creative Hub. John is the winner of the Commonwealth Writers Prize for Best First Book, and the NZ Book Award for Fiction. He was voted Best Post Graduate Teacher by students at AUT University.
