Parker v Meehan is on!
The public’s imagination is set to be ignited by the biggest boxing bout ever staged in Auckland and certainly the biggest bout staged in this country since 2009.
Politicking has been put to one side with New Zealand heavyweight sensation Joseph Parker and Super 8 champion Kali Meehan agreeing terms to fight over 12 rounds in what will be a monster bout at Trusts Arena in Auckland on Thursday October 15.
Up for grabs will be Parker’s WBO Oriental and African titles as well as his WBA PABA and OPBF heavyweight belts while Meehan will also place his WBA Pan African Title on the line.
In total a record six-titles will be fought for, with Parker also defending his New Zealand heavyweight title against a man who lived the first 28 years of his life in West Auckland.
Meehan has always had the respect of the boxing purists in an 18-year professional career which has taken him around the world – the highlight being a world heavyweight title in Las Vegas in 2004.
However, it was not until last year that casual fans began to really take note of him after he followed up his Super 8 victory with a unanimous points win over Shane Cameron which sent the Mountain Warrior into retirement.
The time has now come for a fighter searching for the widespread respect he richly deserves to face New Zealand’s brightest up and coming prospect.
