Finnish clarinet master Kari Kriikku, famous for his “molten virtuosity” and white-hot live performances, is in New Zealand to play Hakola’s rapid-fire Clarinet Concerto with the NZSO. Through the generous assistance of the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra and NZSO Foundation, he will present a masterclass with NZSM students while he is in Wellington.

Kari Kriikku's musical inventiveness and fresh attitude towards traditional performance have established for him a fascinating and versatile career, not only as a soloist but also as Artistic DIrector of Avanti! Chamber Orchestra.

As reported in the New Yorker it is not an uncommon occurrence for this consummate artists to bring his audience to its' feet, even if the repertoire, or Kriikku himself, is being heard for the first time.

The NZSO Foundation Masterclasses provide opportunities for young tertiary level musicians to learn from the distinguished international artists who perform as guests with the NZSO. The masterclasses are hosted by New Zealand’s tertiary music schools and feature students from the host school.

The masterclass is free and observers are welcome.
