Whakareretanga means legacy or inheritance. It also means the process of abandonment or an item thrown away. This exhibition is a collection of art made from metal found in New Zealand's marine and nature reserves.

Artist JoAnna Mere is an environmental jeweller/hei taonga o te whenua with a sustainable arts practice. She draws on contemporary and traditional techniques to create land and body jewellery to explore the visceral and spiritual connections between people and the whenua/land. Her work is a hīkoi/journey that acknowledges the Treaty of Waitangi and focusses upon our relationship with te Āo/the Earth and becoming kaitiaki/custodians for our environment.
