New Zealanders’ knowledge of World War II is often limited to official stories. This course seeks to broaden our understanding of the war by telling lesser known personal stories and anecdotes from different viewpoints. Various topics are covered, such as: stories from the other side – the Germans, Italian and Japanese; the importance of food and food policies in the war; the experiences of prisoners of war and political prisoners; how different countries used propaganda; the role of intelligence services and some spy stories; wartime crime and criminals and the wartime politics of oil and gold. The course also looks at the impact World War II had on three major Asian nations: India, China and Burma.
