Do you engage with heritage buildings and archaeological sites within local government? Want to know more about how Heritage New Zealand operates? Keen to improve your understanding of earthquake strengthening solutions and archaeology?

Heritage New Zealand, in partnership with the Waimakariri District Council and Environment Canterbury, are hosting a day-long Heritage and Local Government Symposium on Thursday 8 October. In the post-quake environment local councils and Heritage New Zealand are facing growing numbers of consenting issues and concerns relating to heritage buildings and archaeological sites. The theme of this symposium is ‘working together’ as it’s increasingly vital that local government, consultants, and Heritage New Zealand collaborate and understand what each other can offer.

The event brings together experts in the fields of heritage incentives and planning, earthquake engineering, archaeology, and heritage law. Speakers include Bruce Chapman (Heritage New Zealand CEO), Win Clark (Structural Engineer, Executive Officer, New Zealand Society for Earthquake Engineering), Nick Cable (Archaeologist, Opus International consultants) and Geraldine Baumann (Senior Legal Advisor, Heritage New Zealand). Sessions will focus on useful new tools, case studies, and learnings. Heritage New Zealand staff will also take you behind the scenes of their organisation to explain what they do and encourage closer working relationships. Stretch your legs during the optional lunchtime walking tour of heritage in Rangiora’s high Street. An afternoon panel of the speakers will look for questions and feedback from symposium attendees

This symposium can count towards CPD points for New Zealand Planning Institute members and CEnvP points for Environment Institute of Australia & New Zealand members. (1 point per hour)
