Join Jonathan Briden at Bats Theatre for a 2 day weekend workshop intensive on the art of Long Form Improvised Theatre.

Jonathan Briden has over 25 years experience in the world of Improv - performing, teaching, directing and producing shows in New Zealand, Australia, England, US and Canada. His approach is in inspired by the Chicago style (IO Chicago / Del Close) combined with the teaching of Dave Razowsky (former Artistic Director of the Second City training program).

Jonathan’s approach to improvisation is relationship based with a strong emphasis on being in the moment. Rather than “creating” a scene, the performers discover the moment in which their character’s exist. The performance is mindful. The performers engage with each other, and the moment. The scenework has greater emotional depth, providing the audience with a more rich, theatrical experience.

In improvisation, comedy is never far away. With this approach, the comedy comes from the relatability of the scene, and the “ahhah!” moments, rather than “clever” oneliners and whacky characters. This workshop will help you connect and engage with your scene partner, to create rich and rewarding scenes. You will learn how to be in the moment by being present, mindful, and aware. You will also learn that letting go of your ego, not planning, and just being in the scene will allow you to create characters who are more real and of much greater depth. You will also learn about creative adjacency and how maintaining an inventory in the scene helps you perform and create a rich imaginative experience for your audience, your scene partner, and yourself. The combination of these techniques makes improvisation effortless.

By practising this approach with others you can build an engaging improvised show. You can also apply these techniques in other, more formatted improvised shows in which you are cast, or you can apply them to scripted pieces for theatre and film. Spaces are limited to 12 participants.
