New Zealand's growing reputation for turning out mysterious musical prodigies continues with the debut EP from the inscrutably monikered MAALA, performing these songs and more at Neck of the Woods.

With a tasteful sound that conveys a rich emotional depth, MAALA is emerging from obscure beginnings to be a new artist truly worth hearing in 2015.

With a name chosen from a pile of random Scrabble letters, MAALA debuted on SoundCloud in March 2015 with "Touch” and the song’s aching minimal electro majesty quickly picked up listeners and interest on a global scale.

Zane Lowe was amongst those immediately curious and, tracking MAALA down to his own home country, he was quick to move and debut next track "In The Air" on Apple Music Beats One.

MAALA, Lowe declared, was a real find with a "record that blew me away".

"Touch" and "In The Air" already now grace the airwaves of New Zealand's alternative, dance and pop radio stations.

And the two songs' recent video clips offer a first real glimpse past the glitchy artwork profiles that had accompanied the singles online of the 20 year-old creator of these tracks and remarkable vocals, one Evan Sinton of Auckland.

Aided by producer Josh Fountain in Auckland's low key recording hub of brilliant electronic pop, Golden Age Studio, Evan has been spending long late night hours crafting MAALA's debut five song EP and what will follow next.

Evan was signed to his label Sony Music as a schoolboy after reaching the final three on New Zealand's Got Talent, the local franchise of the star search entertainment juggernaut, and a promotional whirlwind under the TV pop spotlight had been a baptism of fire for the youthful musician.

So while making music now comes at the end of another day job that pays the bills, Evan works with the resolve of an artist who already understands hard-won opportunity and toil.
