Celebrating Māori New year and learn to cook traditional Māori kai with Matariki Festival.

This free workshop is based on learning the traditional methods for making a hāngī (Māori traditional in ground cooking) and is open to all cultures and people who want the opportunity to learn this style of cooking as part of #Matariki15.

You will learn:

- Starting the fire, without matches or lighter
- Stacking the wood
- Placing of stones
- Weaving of Nikau fronds to protect the food
- Covering hāngī with soil

While the hangi cooks learn some Māori songs and basic protocol. Only halal meat and poultry will be used, to cater for all, and the best part is eating the food that you have cooked alongside new friends!

There are limited spaces, so bookings are essential
