The Gallery is proud to present a selection of original oil and watercolour paintings by Winifred Lile (1907-1997) released from her family’s private collection. Influenced by such contemporaries as Frances Hodgkins, Rita Angus and Toss Woollaston, Winnie’s work is quintessentially kiwi. We are fortunate to be able to feature such a beautiful collection as our first exhibition.

Winifred Lile (nee Reiman) painter, illustrator and designer, spent her early years growing up in Auckland's Grey Lynn / Western Springs area, an experience which helped shape her long held egalitarian and socialist beliefs.
After completing her schooling, Winnie, as she was known, attended the Elam School of Fine Arts. Her early employment years were spent as a commercial artist and sign writer. She later trained and practised as a psychiatric nurse. During World War Two, Winnie worked as an illustrative war diarist for the New Zealand Herald. In the years following World War Two Winnie and her husband, Tom, were able to build their dream home in Titirangi. Titirangi during this time was the active hub of Auckland’s art world and was, to Winnie, paradise.
During the 1950’s Winnie was able to flourish as a painter and she painted prolifically up until the 1980’s. Tragically, Tom died in 1970 leading to Winnie becoming increasingly reclusive. During these reclusive years, Winnie’s paintings began to feature characters drawn from her imagination, often placed in her real physical surroundings.
