About Max Patte - inaugural Wellington exhibition:

Following the stand-out success of his 2014 exhibition, the British-born Wellington- based artist is currently working on a series of light-themed works for 2015. The Max Patte Experience will include two major exhibitions, in Wellington and Auckland, taking place in September/October this year. It will be the artist’s first-ever Wellington exhibition.
Max Patte is well-known to New Zealanders for his spectacular cast iron sculptures – including the iconic Solace in the Wind based on Wellington’s waterfront. His new thematic direction explores the elemental nature of light and space.
“Max began experimenting with light works in his 2014 show but he’s now taken this to a whole new level. He describes these pieces as the ‘next generation’.” Says Patte’s manager, Julia Barnes.

Max has employed the expertise of one of New Zealand’s leading electronics technicians, from Weta Workshop, to produce custom-built technology for the light works. A unique ‘micro-controller’ adjusts the colour over a 4-5 hour time period, creating a slow fade that is imperceptible to the eye. As the colour morphs, so does the tone or mood of the room.

This new direction is inspired by Max’s local environment – specifically, the distinctive skies of Wellington’s south Coast. From his home in Island Bay, Max regularly travels along Wellington’s coastline. His new pieces reflect elements of this changing colour and light.

In another novel feature of the 2015 exhibitions, Max will be transforming the exhibition space itself – creating walls, ceilings and spaces to fully explore his vision. “It’s all about the transformation of space – using light, spatial design, and technology,” says Barnes. “It will be a completely immersive experience.” She adds.

About Max Patte
British born Max Patté burst onto the New Zealand art scene when he unveiled ‘Solace in the Wind’, his first public work on the Wellington water front. Originally installed as a temporary loan to the city, it was purchased by the council after winning as People's Choice for favourite sculpture at the Wellington Civic Trust Awards.

Since then, Max’s works have been collected privately by prominent patrons such as Sir Ian McKellen, Sir Michael Hill, and Charles Saatchi. And, for the first time in Wellington, Max will be exhibiting his works, both sculptural and his new series of light works.
