On the 19th September people will gather to take a positive step for dementia. Alzheimer’s Wanganui is holding its first Memory Walk – a short walk through Wanganui to show support and raise awareness for what is one of New Zealand’s most significant healthcare challenges.

The concept was started last year by Alzheimer’s New Zealand, with 11 towns and cities throughout New Zealand and over 1,000 people taking part. This year it’s expanding further, including coming to Wanganui.

Dementia is one of New Zealand’s most significant and growing healthcare challenges. It’s estimated that there are 53,000 people with dementia in New Zealand, and this is forecast to triple to 150,000 by 2050. The most common form of dementia is Alzheimer’s Disease – which affects around two-thirds of people with dementia. Alzheimer’s Wanganui is a registered charity operating across Whanganui, Rangitikei and the Waimarino. We are dedicated to making life better for all through support services for those affected by dementia, care givers, extended family/whanau, and the community.

If you know someone affected by dementia, or would like to show your support, Alzheimer’s Wanganui invites you to take part. Walk with us to raise awareness for those affected by dementia. Receive a free tshirt to wear (limited quantity so register early), and together we will create an eye-catching sight.

The Wanganui Memory Walk takes place September 19th starting 10.30am at the River Traders Market. Look for the Alzheimer’s Wanganui stall. Join us for a group walk, with a free tshirt, to raise awareness for those affected by dementia. We’ll walk from the Alzheimer’s Wanganui stall at the Rivers Traders Market, along Somme Parade to the Dublin Street Bridge, and back again to the River Traders Market – about 3km along pavement with views over the river. Join us after the walk at the old Roam Café building where we’ll have tea, coffee, and time to chat. Alternatively, the Alzheimer’s Wanganui stall will have a sausage sizzle, refreshments, and other fundraising items for sale.
