Handel’s Messiah will be presented by CBS Music in St Mary’s Pro-Cathedral, Manchester St., on Sunday, December 13, 2015, at 2 pm.

Soloists will be Elizabeth Emeleus, Louisa Pilkington, David O’Beirne, Wally Enright, Ken Joblin and Chris Whelan. The Cathedral Orchestra will be led by Carlo Ballara, with continuo accompaniment by Ellen Doyle and Barry Brinson. Don Whelan will direct the performance. Admission is by programme donation of $20 and $15, available at the door.

This annual Christmas performance has continued to attract a substantial audience. Messiah proved a popular choice on the group’s first four European tours, and its concerts throughout the Americas. While the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament is being rebuilt, the spacious and resonant St Mary’s Pro-Cathedral, Manchester St, is proving an excellent concert venue and temporary home for the regular cathedral music programme. Their new CBS Music Centre will open next year, providing office and library spaces, together with a substantial rehearsal room, which will be available for regular and occasional hire.

Next year, CBS Music continues its popular Lunch Plus Wednesday At One recital series, the Bach St John Passion at 8 pm on Good Friday, and another Christmas Messiah at 2 pm on Sunday, 11 December. A weekend of festivities and a Sunday afternoon concert on May 1st will herald the opening of the new Music Centre with the performance of the mighty Bruckner Te Deum. Further CBS concerts are planned for Sunday, 7 August, and Sunday, 9th October, when the choir and orchestra will present a Concert for Peace, featuring Haydn’s Military Symphony and Mass in Time of War.
The annual Christchurch Choral Festival will be at 7 pm on Saturday, 3rd September.

Following their highly successful 7th world tour (this year Ireland, Scotland and England) the cathedral musicians will travel next Labour Weekend to Blenheim and Nelson.

New members are welcome to join the cathedral choir, which will rehearse next year on Wednesday evenings at 7.30 pm in the new CBS Music Centre. Scholarships are available to students, together with leader/soloist positions. Sight reading ability is expected. Those interested should contact the musical director, Don Whelan, ph. 358 5873.
