The New Zealand School of Music Big Band plays roaring big band music featuring some of Wellington’s best up and coming jazz talent, under the musical direction of Rodger Fox, at Hawke's Bay Jazz Club.

The band has established itself as one of the most exciting additions to the New Zealand big band scene, appearing in concert with major artists such as Mike Nock, trumpeter Jon Papenbrook, trombonist Jim Pugh (Steely Dan and the great Woody Herman Big Band), trumpeter Clay Jenkins, Georgie Fame, International saxophone artist Bob Sheppard and in the Sinatra “Lives” concert series.

In March 2007 the New Zealand School of Music Big Band was the featured band for iconic New Zealand performer Ray Woolf’s CD, which received rave reviews.

In July 2008 the band undertook one of the most challenging musical events, of recreating the music of award winning composer/arranger Gil Evans. The music was sourced from the Gil Evan’s trust and it was the first time those arrangements had been performed in New Zealand.

In 2009 there were performances at the Wellington Jazz Festival, Deco Decanted Jazz Festival in Napier, and the Tauranga and Manawatu Jazz Festivals.

In 2010 the Band was awarded the Tui Award for Best Jazz Recording of the Year with their CD “Run For Cover.” Subsequent annual CDs have included “Funk City Ola” and "Midnight Voyage."

The band performs a cross-section of material made famous by bands and artists such as Woody Herman, Bob Mintzer, Buddy Rich, and Bill Holman, Count Basie and Maynard Ferguson.

Bring your friends for a powerful night of big band jazz, with meals available from the kitchen and drinks at the cash bar.

This night is a "must do" for all Hawke's Bay secondary school students thinking about a career in performance music.
