Directed by Andrew Withington, the internationally awarded national choir presents a one hour concert with repertoire including Schutz, Mendelssohn, Cole Porter, Chris Artley, Morten Lauridsen, David N. Childs, Michael McGlynn.

“The NZSSC gave all that is the best of youthful musical performance…. serious, fun, energetic, thoughtful and intelligent, and the repertoire covered a wide range of musical styles.” David Sell, Christchurch, July 2014

“The homogenous sound of these 60-plus singers, auditioned countrywide each two years, is nothing short of astonishing.” Peter Williams, Hawkes Bay, Jan 2012

The choir has 60 amazing young singers from 38 schools, Dunedin to Whangarei, including 6 at Christchurch schools. Students gather each school holidays for intensive rehearsals and concerts throughout the country. In July 2016 the NZSSC has been invited as Guest Choir to the International Choral Kathaumixw in Powell River, British Columbia, Canada. The festival was set up in 1984, based on the premise of Llangollen’s Eisteddfod. Thirty years later, the festival is recognised worldwide for its high standards of choral music, attracting competing choirs from every continent. The NZSSC competed at the Kathaumixw in 2004 and 2010, winning The People’s Choice among other category placings in 2010. According to Paul Cummings, Artistic Director of the Festival, NZSSC is remembered in the local community for “riveting performances” and “an entertaining, moving and a varied program”. As Guest Choir, the NZSSC will perform with the Kathaumixw Festival Chorus during Opening and Closing Gala Concerts, lead massed choir performances and offer our unique New Zealand flavour of music in joint concerts with many international choirs. In addition, Andrew Withington, NZSSC Musical Director, will join the international jury for the competition.
