Spend an evening among the stars! Two of Aotearoa’s hottest musicians, Ria Hall and Robert Ruha, perform with winners of our talent competition. To celebrate Matariki, the Māori New Year, these outstanding musicians are joined by the four winners of Te Papa’s nationwide Facebook competition.

Held at Te Marae, Level 4, Museum of Te Papa Tongarewa.

Songs of love competition

The theme for Te Papa’s Matariki celebrations this year is ‘He rau tangata, he kōingo aroha’ (the people gather and affirm love in a myriad of ways). We’re holding a Facebook waiata (song) composition competition, and we’re looking for songs that honour the idea of love. Your waiata could honour tūpuna (ancestors) who fought at Gallipoli, or you could get creative around aroha (love) for people, or iwi (tribes) in times of conflict. Entries can be in te reo Māori or ngā reo e rua (English and Māori). Contestants need to submit a video of their waiata to Te Papa’s Facebook page by midnight 15 May 2015. The four winners will be announced on 29 May, and will take their place onstage at Wellington’s Matariki Festival concert at Te Papa’s Te Marae on 18 June. There, they will perform alongside some of Aotearoa’s hottest musical talent, including Ria Hall and Rob Ruha.
