The observatory visit is free but the a ticket is required for the return bus trip if you require transport.

Visit the telescopes, talk to astronomers about their work, see the instruments and computers they use, go to the Earth & Sky Astrocafé on Mt John for refreshments. The Open Day at Mt John will include a themed treasure hunt at Mt John, especially suited to families with school-age children.

For those participating in the Treasure Hunt you can collect a free activity booklet either from the Earth & Sky office in Tekapo village or from the Astrocafe on the summit of Mt John. The booklet will be available from 10 am on 11 October from both venues. The treasure hunt is a free activity as part of the Mt John visit, and the expected duration is 30 to 90 minutes.

Bus leaves Twizel Events Centre 1.30pm, leaves Mt John 4.30pm for those who need transport.
Mt John is New Zealand’s only professional observatory for research in optical astronomy, founded in 1965 and now in its 50th year.
