Orchestra Wellington Family Concert: Roald Dahl’s Dirty Beasts, and Maui’s Fishhook
3pm Sunday 12 July
The Opera House, Wellington

Orchestra Wellington’s Family Concert this year features the formidable acting talent of James Rolleston to narrate the classic Maori legend, Maui’s Fishhook. Rolleston shot to fame at the age of 11 with an unforgettable performance as the lead in Taika Waititi’s 2010 film, Boy. More recently he has received awards and outstanding reviews for his role as Mana in the 2014 James Robertson film, The Dark Horse, and his portrayal of a chieftain’s son, Hongi, in Toa Fraser’s Dead Lands.

Born and raised in Opotiki, on the East Cape, Rolleston is fluent in te reo and the story of Maui’s Fishhook will certainly be familiar to him. He too loves to fish, having learned the art from his Koro. He caught his first fish when he was two. Though he’s never yet caught something the size of te ika a Maui, Rolleston dreams of one day becoming a marine biologist, and who knows what he might find then?

Maui’s Fishhook is an original piece for orchestra and narrator written for Orchestra Wellington by its Education Composer in Residence, Thomas Goss. The famous story of Maui’s fishing trip and how he pulled up the North Island from the Pacific Ocean is transformed into a musical voyage.

Younger listeners are encouraged to participate, as they help paddle Maui’s canoe out to sea, or join maestro Marc Taddei in conducting the orchestra.

Also on the programme is Roald Dahl’s humorous tale Dirty Beasts, set to music by British composer Benjamin Wallfisch.
