Renowned for her beautiful, vibrant canvases of large, looming flowers, Pamela Wolfe is regarded as one of New Zealand’s pre-eminent painters.

A chromatic master, Wolfe employs a full, saturated palette to communicate the vibrant yet detailed anatomy of exotic floras in her paintings. Depicting the three phases of the flower – bud, bloom and blown, she references the passage of time and the effects that it wreaks on nature in her large scale paintings.

The introduction of exotic floral species that seem to spill out of the picture plane are enriched by Wolfe’s delicate brushwork. The finely detailed leaf forms combined with the plump, dew-like petals of roses are accentuated by the striking backgrounds that frame these floral arrangements. The paintings are in themselves elegant masterpieces that exude an inviting tactility, beckoning the viewer to be transported into a world of floral delight.

This exhibition reveals a continuation of Wolfe’s ability to create works that breathe a resplendent delicacy. A departure for the the artist is the inclusion of five gouache on paper works. The series of works titled, Spring in London, were completed whilst Wolfe was resident in London earlier this year. The smaller scale of these paintings allowed the artist to experiment with several arrangements, playing with light and composition. The elegant array of english cottage garden flowers, combined with Wolfe’s delicate, swift brushstrokes combine to create truly unique compositions.
