We are pleased to invite you to an exciting solo exhibition of Peter Mousdale's recent artwork at Exhibitions Gallery. Peter's artwork reflects a continuing fascination with Chinese culture, calligraphy, history and research into the architecture of nineteenth century buildings in Shanghai and in the former treaty port of Yantai.

In particular, the large wooden doors of old merchant houses with many layers of 'skins' formed by posters, messages, words, traditional New Year and wedding greetings left by generations of families who witnessed one hundred and fifty years of China's history.

The exhibition is the culmination of sixteen years experience, travel and working in China as a visiting professor at a university in Yantai, including solo exhibition in 2007 of Chinese-influenced works in Shanghai. He has also had solo exhibitions in London and Liverpool in the UK, USA, and New Zealand. Peter's work has been featured in the BBC arts programme 'Arena'.

The work in the exhibition consists of large drawings, colour studies and full-size recreations of large wooden double doors with their richly collaged and multi-layered surfaces. It is hoped that the 'Chinese Doorways' exhibition will provide visitors with a doorway into a small part of Chinese culture interpreted by a New Zealand artist.

We are honoured to have Consul General Niu Qingbao of the People's Republic of China in Auckland opening the exhibition.
