Te Uru Karaka have the privilege of running the annual Kohanga Reo Rā Hakinakina day. This is an opportunity for our mokopuna to celebrate Māoritanga within the context of sport and play. The day will utilise age and developmentally appropriate games in a rational format with the key emphasis being whakawhanaungatanga (making connections with people), participation, personal challenge, teamwork and enjoyment. It is an extension of our kohanga philosophies which aims to provide an environment where the Māori language, cultural practises and values are demonstrated in an environment of excitement and celebration. Te Reo Māori me ōna tikanga will underpin the entire event which will be delivered totally in Te Reo Māori. 9 Kohanga will be attending alongside Kaumatua (elders) and supported by tuakana (older brother/sisters) who will manaaki (provide hospitality) and look after our mokopuna thus providing the social construct which is unique to how our tupuna (ancestors) lived, and to which we aspire to preserve in these modern times.
