“You can’t help but feel uplifted when viewing these paintings. The simplicity of the composition and colour palette brings about a feeling of warm, dry days wandering outdoors in a foreign land…” J. Killonback 2015

This exhibition ‘Return Journeys’ features two concurrent bodies of work. ‘Turkish Delight’ and ‘Desert Blues’. The works shown here are a distillation of memories from my travels to Turkey and Morocco.

My painting practice is based around the two disciplines of painting and printmaking.
Central to my practice is a return to places through memory. Through experimentation, I engage with a selection of various media, gradually honing a methodology that best suits my aims. Challenges along the way regularly present themselves. Unfamiliar compositional arrangements, various colour palettes and substrate surfaces, or the implementation of new tools, all extend the range of visual complexities and delights.

More often, images begin by the laying down of a base colour and an intuitive response to this through the use of simple forms and the interaction of positive and negative space. New images are created as the planes and lines intercept. The addition of colour layers, texture, matte and gloss, means the positive and negative interplay may change many times before a work is complete. I allow the structure and colour to develop as the layers build. A work reaches completion when I feel I have reached a moment of serendipitous truth.

I love the materiality and physicality of paint and all that it encompasses. The more recent addition of printmaking to my practice has expanded my joy of drawing and, in turn, connected back to my painting, enriching it in ways I could never have envisaged.
