Ruth Tidemann has been painting all her life, and birds and women have often featured in her paintings. As a small child Ruth watched the rosellas and magpies in her Adelaide innercity suburban garden, but quickly graduated to bush bird watching at the family hobby farm.

Birds have been in her consciousness ever since and have inspired her life and art. This exhibition encourages the examination of a bird’s chief characteristics. These are up for personal interpretation, but the artist sees a beauty that connects to women and stands against the demeaning nature of bird names for women such as the modern chicks and bird of the 70s.

Here, in a humorous way, Ruth also depicts women as birds taking on strong, proud, beautiful, wise, even corporate aspects but always in a way that allows the bird woman to express herself in the surety of her ability to transcend. …and still she sing, knowing she has wings. (Victor Hugo)
