Dr Paul Scofield, Senior Curator Natural History at Canterbury Museum, will speak about the remarkable fossil history of North Canterbury sea birds and their evolution.

Paul’s specific research interest is vertebrate palaeontology (the science of fossil backboned animals) in particular the palaeontology and evolution of birds and bird-like dinosaurs. He works mainly with material from the Cenozoic era (more than 65 million years ago) from New Zealand, Australia and the South Pacific but he has published on fossils from Europe and Antarctica. He’s also interested in the evolution, biology and demography of seabirds and New Zealand’s giant birds such as moa.
