Summer Shakespeare Shakes It Up With a Rebel Yell – Shakespeare’s Rebels

From the creators of last year’s hit Summer Shakespeare “Passionate Acts” comes “Shakespeare's Rebels”.
Enjoy scenes from some of Shakespeare's most popular and unusual plays including King Lear, The Tempest, Corolianus, Twelfth Night, Julius Caesar, Macbeth, Merchant of Venice and more.

This year Artistic Director Grae Burton says to expect more of the anthology, “Short, Sharp Shakespeare,” which drew audiences to last year’s critically acclaimed production. “This year’s season is another great combination of comedy and pathos, physical and dramatic theatre with a few twists along the way.”

Shakeitup! is a company producing theatre with a difference - a unique twist on a classic work originally presented once again in the Verandah at Cable Bay Vineyards. “We perform outside, with the audience seated around us, surrounded by breath taking views. Last year, we were beyond capacity for our single show, so this year we have added a second performance, but people will still need to book early,” says Burton.

The Shakeitup! Company includes Moana McArtney (returning from last year’s production) and company newcomers Catherine Boniface and Jennifer Freed; Wallace Arts Trust Artist in Residence Paul Trimmer and Wallace Arts Trustee, actor Sam Mannering. Also joining the company onstage is founder and former artistic director of The Auckland Theatre Company and Auckland Arts Festival, Simon Prast. This is the only professional theatre company producing Summer Shakespeare in New Zealand and a very special annual event for Waiheke Island.

Katy Jameson, Cable Bay Vineyards, says: “We’re really excited to welcome Shakeitup! back to our Verandah – we received such a fantastic response from the island last time, with queues at the door for last-minute tickets and it’s great to be able to offer families an opportunity to see professional, top quality theatre at an affordable price. Our Verandah creates a really unique space to experience live theatre in, whilst enjoying our spectacular views and award-winning food and wine.”

Audiences are invited to arrive from 6:30pm for delicious pre-show dining at Cable Bay’s new outdoor kitchen, complete with wood-fired oven.

Praise for the 2014 Season - Passionate Acts
“…a sublime venue for almost anything and is perfect for this... Thanks for the delicate – and kindly – reminder that life can be filled with joy when we take the time to look it.” – New Zealand Theatre News

“For me it was the choice of what to show and when to stop that was most inspired, giving us a glimpse of the versatility of the Bard without being flippant and “only doing the best bits”. Adding to the magical evening were so many factors – the beautiful surroundings; the falling of dusk; the passerby kids peering over the hedge in the background stopping to watch, the automatic lights coming on at just the right time...” - New Zealand Theatre Scenes
