Vaughan Williams: Symphony No. 1, A Sea Symphony

‘Behold, the sea!’ – the electrifying opening announces this magnificent choral work. In his setting of Walt Whitman’s poetry, Vaughan Williams not only depicts winds, waves and endless vistas, but also contemplates man’s ambivalent relationship with the seas throughout the ages. Soprano Anna Leese and acclaimed Polish baritone Marcin Bronikowski (courtesy of NZ Opera) join the massive combined City Choir Dunedin and Auckland Choral, under the inspired direction of Nicholas Braithwaite.

Modi Deng, who is heading to Auckland for further study, will have her exquisite touch and technical ease to the fore in Rachmaninov’s first piano concerto which opens this concert.

The concert is marks the end of Sydney Manowitz’s tenure as Concertmaster after just over 20 distinguished years, the longest tenure for any NZ professional orchestra’s Concertmaster.
