Supertonic, the 50 strong choir of Wellington young professionals, will return to the stage on Saturday October 3rd with its latest concert series, ‘Fighting in the Dancehall’. The concert will be a departure from the choir’s previous efforts, covering the iconic 1970’s albums Hunky Dory by David Bowie, and Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours.

Supertonic was created to provide its singers with a choral experience that performs in the traditional classical concert format as well as exploring innovative and experimental choral possibilities. The albums chosen represent two sides of 1970’s music: the folk-rock soaring harmonies of Fleetwood Mac as Rumours literally chronicles the collapse of the band’s relationships, and the offbeat glamrock non sequitur humour of Hunky Dory. Musical Director Isaac Stone chose these two albums “for the breadth of emotion, quirkiness, light-hearted fun and heavy-hearted self-reflection”, represented not only in the album’s hits but also the little-known gems.

Highlights include ‘Gold Dust Woman’, which ends with a battling duet from soprano powerhouses Evie Rainey and Ellie Stewart, the tender ‘Songbird’ sung by just the Soprano and Alto sections and accompanied beautifully on the harp by Alan Keegan, and the fullness that the classically trained singers bring to the theatrical Life of Mars. The sheer variety of colours and consorts in the concert means that there will be something familiar and something new for everyone in the audience.

Having formed at the start of 2014, Supertonic is a relative newcomer in the Wellington singing community. It has quickly established a reputation for excellence, particularly after its hugely successful The Prisoner Rises concert series in June, which culminated in a final concert at Sacred Heart Cathedral in front of a capacity crowd. Stone puts the success down to the choirs spirit of serious musicianship but within a social collaborative environment. “In order to create music of a high standard the choir needs to know each other and trust each other”. Listening to the choir, that approach clearly comes across in the ownership every singer takes of the music.

The show has sold out, but seats are being offered for the final dress rehearsal, to be performed at The Hunter Lounge, Victoria University on Saturday October 3, 3:00pm. Tickets are $10 for both waged and unwaged, and available for purchase through Eventfinda now.
