Supertonic, the Wellington Young Professionals Choir, is excited to be returning to Masterton to debut The Prisoner Rises: songs of resolve and resistance in a matinee performance at St Luke’s Union Church, Masterton, on the afternoon of Sunday, 14th June.

The Prisoner Rises: songs of resolve and resistance examines themes of incarceration and persecution. It focuses on choral settings of texts composed by people suffering different types of imprisonment, for instance as slaves, in asylums and as prisoners in concentration camps. The programme features Benjamin Britten’s Rejoice in the Lamb, Donald McCullough’s Holocaust Cantata and Aaron Rosenthal’s Voices of Terezin. It will also include traditional spirituals, music from the suffragette movement and Vaughan Williams’ The Sky Above the Roof.

Formed in 2014, the choir is entering its second year with 56 talented and passionate singers in their twenties and thirties, a new name and an exciting series of performances scheduled. Musical Director Isaac Stone describes the choir as "a place where people can get to know new people and new music, in a fun, collaborative and demanding environment", adding that the most satisfying singing comes from a mixture of singing well and enjoying who you are singing with.
