This course introduces contemporary debate about surveillance and asks to what extent New Zealand might be considered a ‘surveillance society’. Who is under surveillance, what data is collected, by what means and for what purposes? Discussion about national state surveillance (past and present), the era of ‘big data’ and the role new technology plays in ubiquitous consumer monitoring will help you answer these questions and to consider why privacy matters, even if you have nothing to hide.
