Auckland Jazz and Blues Club Present:
Susan Gai Dowling - Australia and Carol Ralph - Australia
Susan Gai Dowling jumped back into music during the 1980’s and has been in constant work as a Jazz singer at major venues and festivals here in Australia and overseas ever since including, an appearance last year at New York’s Birdland.

Soon after Susan Gai returned to the stage she realised a dream of promoting her passion for jazz by joining a community radio station as a presenter. She now presents a jazz programme in Sydney at Fine Music 102.5fm on Monday nights 10-12pm (The Australian Jazz Scene).

Susan Gai has released five albums –“ Rent Party”,” Where’s Love Gone”,” Yellow Daze” a compilation “ Live at the Reservoir” and more recently “In Summer”.
All feature the cream of Australian Jazz musicians including Bernie McGann, John Pochee, Carl Dewhurst, Lloyd Swanton, David Levy, Brett Hirst, James Hauptman, Greg Royal and Cameron Undy.

“No one pushes the beat or phrases more personally”
“Her delivery sends her superb band into overdrive.”
“This is very well sung indeed.”
John Clare Sydney Morning Herald – review of Rent Party

“The entire band cooks. Susan Gai Dowling is a soulful and buoyant singer.”
Cadence Music magazine Canada – review of Rent Party.

“Fine singers and drummers are as rare in Australia as driveable roads and drinkable pinot noir. Singer Susan Gai Dowling and John Pochee are both members of this elite club and here they are in one band ….. one left the performance glowing.”
John Shand Sydney Morning Herald – review of Where’s Love Gone.

“Sidestepping the mannerisms, childish desire to impress and look-at-me obsessions that best most singers, Susan Gai Dowling dances into the arms of truth.”

John Shand Sydney Morning Herald – review of In Summer Carol Ralph
Carol is considered by many musicians and fans to be a fine traditional singer of blues and gospel tunes. She is equally at home in more mainstream settings and enjoys different styles of music.

Carol is in great demand at festivals throughout Australia, and usually performs as a featured singer, with a love of life, people and singing adding to her great stage presence. Hers is a natural talent and although her favourites include Billie Holiday, Bessie Smith, Alberta Hunter, Mahalia Jackson, Peggy Lee and Sarah Vaughan, obvious influences are not evident to listeners.

CAROL RALPH, one of Australia’s most dynamic and charismatic jazz vocalists, swings! This is a rare skill believe it or not and very exciting to listen to. She has performed throughout the world at Jazz Festivals and has toured extensively with the The Spirit of New Orleans Jazz Band in the UK, Switzerland, Japan and N.Z. and of course appears regularly at Jazz Festivals in Australia. Although the Blues is her great forte, Carol doesn’t restrict herself to this style. She’s an innovative singer and possesses the essential ingredient in all good jazz, ‘the sound of surprise’

Carol and Susan will be backed by the Mike Walker Trio
