Waikanae Music Society presents the Te Kōkī Trio

The Waikanae Music Society’s concert on Sunday 28 June will feature the Te Kōkī Trio. The trio was very enthusiastically received when they last played in Waikanae in 2013 and their return performance is eagerly anticipated. Chinese-American pianist Jian Liu, New Zealand violinist Martin Riseley and Israeli-American cellist Inbal Megiddo are all distinguished musicians with extensive international performance experience. They are based at the New Zealand School of Music in Wellington where they are lecturers in classical performance. Te Kōkī
is the name of the music school and translates as “dawn chorus”.

The trio’s programme is full of contrasts. There will be a rare opportunity to hear a work by Fanny Mendelssohn, older sister of the great Felix Mendelssohn. Fanny was a prodigiously talented performer and composer but prevailing attitudes of her time meant that her works were not permitted to be published. As a stark contrast to the lush romanticism of her music will be Island Songs by New Zealand composer John Psathas – music which draws upon his Greek heritage. To complete the programme will be Schubert’s gloriously tuneful second trio.

The concert, in the Waikanae Memorial Hall, starts at 2.30pm. Door sales will be available or tickets can be bought from Waikanae New World, Moby Dickens Books in Paraparaumu Beach or from Lush Design Gallery in Raumati. Enquiries are welcome on 04 905 6070 or visit our website.
