When he agreed to give up city comforts and live in a paddock to film the TV show “Off the Radar”, Te Radar had little idea what would be in store for him. The ideas he did have soon proved to be totally wrong. Nor did he realise that four TV series later his journey into sustainability would have taken him far further afield than a field.

In this humorous illustrated talk, A Lighter Shade of Green, Te Radar will expose the lies of generations of television gardeners, celebrate some of the characters he’s met, and reveal some of New Zealand's hilarious animal history – from sheep and cows to zebra-drawn carriages and big cat escapes.

Travelling around New Zealand and to far-flung eco hotspots such as Rwanda and Cuba, Te Radar’s been privileged to encounter people and ideas that are changing the world. He spent more time than necessary in sewage treatment facilities, had an inappropriate encounter with a guinea pig, and ended up driving a race car with parts made from potato starch at over 200km/hour.

He’ll share lessons he’s learned about how to begin to live a better life, the value of communities, and why failure should be celebrated. He’ll reveal behind-the-scenes tales of joy and incompetence. Mostly incompetence. And he will be more than happy to answer questions and engage in robust chit-chat. Te Radar prides himself on having particular expertise in what not to do.
