Travel with Steam Incorporated on this special Anzac excursion from the Manawatu to Wellington to coincide with the official opening of the National War Memorial Park in Wellington.

The train will be hauled by our “new” steam locomotive Ab608 “Passchendaele” and we will be using our fleet of heritage carriages, most with open end balconies.

WWI memorial locomotive Ab608 “Passchendaele” only returned to service in mid 2014 after a major restoration taking many years and costing over half a million dollars. Ab608 was built in 1915, the first of the successful and prolific Ab class, and in 1925 named “Passchendaele” in memory of all of the railwaymen that fell in the Great War. It is fitting that we are able to run this excursion with “Passchendaele” to coincide with the National War Memorial Park opening ceremony.

Most of the carriages on the train were built over 100 years ago and were in service during WWI. The train will also include a buffet car selling drinks and snacks. Cash only.

Train also stops for prebooked passengers at Shannon and Levin. There will be a stop at Otaki in each direction to service the loco and give you the opportunity of a leg stretch. At Wellington buses will meet the train to transfer you to and from the National War Memorial.

We are only able to run this excursion thanks to a generous grant from the Lotteries Grants Board to assist WWI 100 events. This has enabled us to offer low fares for this Anzac Day event. The adult return fare is only $99 and the child is $69. These fares include bus transfers between the Wellington Railway Station and the vicinity of the National War Memorial.
