To celebrate this wonderful milestone in our long and successful history of bringing affordable quality theatre to Christchurch audiences, our challenge was to come up with a presentation that meets the expectations of the society, to celebrate 25 years of musicals by Riccarton Players

The Result: We have merged selections from popular shows into a production aptly called The First Quarter because there are many years and many shows ahead of the society before it reaches the magical century.

Hard to believe that a quarter of a century has passed and over that period some fantastic productions and casts just begging to be invited for a fresh vitality by a production that can encompass a wealth of tunes with a wealth of knowledge and experience where a large company all have their moment of glory while combing their talents with others for mutual satisfaction.

Enjoy a wonderful montage with selections from “Oliver”; “Chess”; Godspell”; “Joseph & The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” “Whistle Down The Wind” “Cabaret”; “The Sound Of Music”; “Blood Brothers”; “Annie”; “Jesus Christ Superstar” and many more. Perfect for some pre-Christmas family entertainment of a high calibre.

This year we are enhancing the theatre going experience by providing limited VIP Tables for 4, seated around the staging area each evening and included with this offer is a Food Platter & Bottle of Wine, along with General Admission ticketing.

Riccarton Players has presented an annual musical production since 1989 – the first being “The Secret Diary Of Adrian Mole Aged 13 ¾” all directed by Riccarton Players’ stalwart, Doug Clarke, whose mantra for these has remained firm – to stage popular modern musicals within the confines of a strict budget without diminishing their appeal – or their credibility.

“I believe a great musical is a musical regardless of “trappery and trimmings”, says Clarke. “We strive for the ‘moon and back’ and are happy to land on the ‘Milky Way’; we are dedicated to the authors intent and we supplement and embellish it with lighting and simple staging to complete the package, keeping costs relative which in turn reflects on a realistic admission price”.
Choreographing the production is Annette Searle, who is also Co-director. returning to work again with Doug (this will be their 21st show together). Annette is a graduate of the NZ School of Dance and has a Masters Degree in Performing Arts, and is currently acting Head Of Drama at Papanui High School.

Musical Director is Nicola Hew, stepping into this role for the first time and relishing the opportunity to expand her musical awareness, and share her wealth of experience with the cast.

We looking forward to seeing you at what is going to be a very enjoyable evening’s (or matinee) performance.
