When people come to meditation it is an assurance for them to know they belong to a tradition. For us as Christians that tradition goes back to the earliest times but specifically to the writings of the Tenth Conference of John Cassian. The tradition re-emerges in the Middle Ages with the unknown author of The Cloud of Unknowing.

In Western Christianity the practice has come and gone over the centuries although preserved in some
monasteries. Eastern Christianity has preserved the tradition. It is a practice that appears to meet the needs of an age where there is great change, which is why in this age many are being called to practise this method of prayer.
