Come and listen to this informative and interesting presentation by Lieutenant Colonel Cliff Simons, PhD.

The outbreak of war in August 1914 offered the promise of great adventure and patriotic glory and thousands of young New Zealand men clamoured to enlist in the first few weeks. Eight months later they landed on the barren shores of the Gallipoli Peninsular and faced the brutal reality of modern warfare. The presentation will discuss why New Zealand went to war, what happened at Gallipoli and what the consequences were of that disastrous campaign.

Cliff worked as a teacher for a number of years before joining the New Zealand Army in 1981. He has had a long career as a military educator, both in New Zealand and with an overseas defence force, and is currently serving in the rank of Lieutenant Colonel as Director of the New Zealand Wars Study Centre.

Cliff attended the 2015 Centennial Commemorations in Gallipoli as a Military Historian accompanying a large party of New Zealanders.
