The war between Ukraine and the Russian Federation has become a major international crisis. This course provides a historical background to the conflict. You will receive an overview of 20th-century Russian–Ukrainian history, survey Russian intervention in the “near abroad” since the collapse of the Soviet Union, and discuss recent events. This is an expanded and updated version of the 2014 Continuing Education course The Ukrainian Revolution and the Crimean Crisis.

Alexander Maxwell is a historian at Victoria University, specialising in Eastern Europe. He teaches HIST245 Peoples of the Soviet Empire and HIST448 National Awakening in Eastern Europe.
