This course is intended for those who want to write a novel, short stories, or a memoir / autobiography. We provide a fun and stimulating environment in which you can discover your authentic writing voice. The classroom course has been full in most years, so it is advisable to enroll early.

This 30 week, two semester course starts in Sept 2015 and runs until May 2016 with a break for one on one mentoring over the summer. It is facilitated by John Cranna and is his successor to the Masters of Creative Writing course he founded at AUT University, and which was voted Best-Taught Post Graduate Course by students in 2008. The online version of this course can be begun at any time.

John Cranna is the winner of the Commonwealth Writers Prize for Best First Book, and the NZ Book Award for Fiction. The main feature of the course is a weekly three hour group meeting, in which student work is discussed and critiqued in an informal but supportive environment. Craft and technical issues arise organically from discussion of this work. Students keep a reading and writing journal, which helps chart their development during the year.

A number of leading NZ fiction writers and publishers will hold specialist craft workshops during the classroom course; writers holding workshops in 2014-15 included Roger Hall, Tessa Duder, Owen Marshall, Sarah Laing, Judith White and former Penguin publisher Geoff Walker who ran a workshop of niche E / self-publishing through Create Space and similar online tools. The main craft issues of dialogue, character, plot and structure, point of view, description, voice and theme will all be addressed during group sessions.

In addition, each student will be matched to an established NZ fiction / writer, for one on one mentoring. This is the sixth year the course has run, and personal mentors on the Fiction Course in 2014-15 included Fiona Kidman, Chris Else, Sue McCauley, Owen Marshall, Elizabeth Smither, Lynn Davidson, Dan Myers, John Cranna, Janice Marriott and Sarah Laing.

At the end of the course, the student will be provided with an analysis, in the form of a publishers readers report, on the strengths and weaknesses of her / his manuscript. Successful completion of the course will result in the award of the Higher Certificate in Writing from the Creative Hub.

Thirteen graduates of our 30-week fiction courses have had their novels published or won prizes in national writing awards. See here for more details. Our students regularly feature amongst prize-winners in national competitions.

Those who complete the Introduction to Creative Writing Course, or Summer Fiction School, receive a 10% discount on this course's fees.

Students can pay the course fee by interest free monthly payments, spread over two years. If you are interested in taking up this option, please contact The Creative Hub for more information.

In the online version of this course, students are guided through the modules of the course by their own personal facilitator, who will provide feedback and assistance via email and SKYPE / phone. In addition they will be matched to an established NZ writer for one on one mentoring.
